Interior Chimney Inspections

The Chimney Safety Institute of American (CSIA) recommends yearly visual inspections of fireplace and wood burning chimneys. Even if a fireplace is not often used, damage from the elements or just one overheated fire, can result in a dangerous chimney. In most years there are over 25,000 Chimney Fires in the US that are responsible for over 125 million dollars in property damage. The interior of a chimney is excluded from a home inspection because it requires special equipment and training to complete. Using advanced multi-camera technology that allows us to see the interior of the chimney from every angle we can add this service to your inspection.

Typical defects we can identify are cracks and holes in the flue liner, excessive creosote build up, missing mortar between clay flue tiles, damaged metal chimney liners, missing mortar or bricks in the chimney or firebox, damaged smoke shelf, broken damper or thimbles, water intrusion or damage, missing liners, and more.

A well maintained masonry chimney can last 100 years[ or more, however, if neglected or damaged a chimney can become dangerous to operate and costly to repair. Knowing the condition of the chimney in the home you are purchasing or living in is important to the safety and health of your family. We encourage all homes with wood burning appliances such as fireplaces and wood stoves to add a chimney inspection to their home inspection. We can also inspect chimneys used for other appliances too, such as furnaces, water heaters, an boilers.
